European Awareness is a cross-curricular element of the United Kingdom National Curriculum. It's intention is to introduce a greater understanding of the make-up, nature and institutions of the European Union - with all the implied benefits that greater understanding would bring.
At present, schools have to rely on dispirate information and data in order to prepare teaching material for this element.
The European Awareness Project has been established to set about gathering and distilling information relevant and useful to school pupils and others interested in all things European. Its aim is to construct a broad database which presents material in an engaging and informative manner.
The European Awareness Project is a non-commercial, non-profit making venture. Upon completion it will be made available to educational establishments on a material-cost basis.
The development team, from a variety of media and computer related backgrounds, are all contributing to the project on a voluntary basis. The test site for the project is the Mark Rutherford Upper School and Community College, Bedford.
At present, the team are searching for visual and aural material to enhance the quality of the project. Anything which conveys a flavour of Europe, or an individual member country or sub-culture would add to the user's understanding of how Europe works. Hardware, on a donation or loan basis, would also aid the project in its development.
